Learning objectives: 1. To review the pathophysiology of paragonimiasis 2. To demonstrate radiologic findings of paragonimiasis 3. To understand and study differential diagnoses of paragonimiasis

Background: Paragonimiasis is a parasitic disease caused by the trematode Paragonimus westermani or other species of Paragonimus. Human infection occurs by ingestion of raw or incompletely cooked freshwater crab or crayfish infected with the metacercaria. Paragonimiasis is endemic in certain areas of East and S[...]

Findings and procedure details: We analysed total of 20 patients who had been diagnosed with paragonimiasis. The results are as follows: Hydrothorax: 9 patients (2 presenting bilaterally) Hydropneumothorax: 2 patients Consolidation: 6 patients Consolidation with airbubble: 3 patients Nodule: 6 patients Linear or tubular densitie[...]

Conclusion: 1. The common CT findings of pleuoropulmonary paragonimiasis are: hydrothorax, hydropneumothorax, subpleural or perifissural consolidations, and linear or tubular subpleural densities. 2. Peripheral pulmonary mass-like lesions with internal low density and copresentation with subpleural tubular de[...]
