Aims and objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate associations among tumor imaging features observed on baseline pelvic MRI and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level in patients with rectal cancer. Our objectives and research questions were: (1) is there any value of CEA outside of metastatic setting, (2)[...]

Methods and materials: There were 371 patients with 377 rectal tumors included in the study (6 patients had two synchronous lesions). All patients were examined in our institution between December 2013 and February 2016. We included patients with available CEA level information which were obtained up to 4 weeks before and[...]

Results: In our study, 377 rectal tumors were analyzed. Majority of analyzed tumors was T3 stage (66%) with positive nodal status (67%). Mean CEA level was 20.8 (SD 98.6, median 4.0 [0.3-1485.3]). All tumor characteristics are summarized in table 1 and table 2. The highest positive correlation was found for [...]

Conclusion: In this study, higher CEA levels were found in patients with higher tumor and nodal stage, longer circumferential tumors, larger mesorectal lymph nodes, presence of extra-mesorectal lymph nodes and EMVI. However, correlation between these findings on baseline MRI exam and level of CEA was not strong[...]
