Learning objectives: In this educational poster/session, the use of PET and CTA as additional tools for the diagnosis of prosthetic heart valve endocarditis, and their respective pitfalls, will be addressed.
Background: Over 300.000 prosthetic heart valves are implanted every year. Besides known complications of valve thrombosis and degeneration, another complication, namely prosthetic heart valve endocarditis (PVE) affects 0.3-2% of patients per year, thereby affecting up to 6% of patients within the first 5 years[...]
Findings and procedure details: Recently, thanks to its ability to detect an inflammatory response even before structural damage ensues, along with CTA, PET/CT was introduced in the 2015 guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology for the diagnosis of prosthetic heart valve endocarditis, as a new major diagnostic criterion (F[...]
Conclusion: PET and CTA are two techniques newly to be used in the diagnosis of PVE. When used correctly in adequately selected and prepared patients, it can significantly improve the accuracy of the diagnostic workup and even guide a therapeutic approach.
