Aims and objectives: 2015's annual statistic of medical errors in treatment in Germany showed that 43% of all errors in the medical sector were caused in surgical departments. 1   Meanwhile, preoperative planning is mainly based on 2D datasets ignoring the angle and the resulting distortion of the measured distance[...]

Methods and materials: We acquired 3D models of osteosynthesis materials using high-resolution dual-energy computed tomography on a Somatom Definitions Force (Siemens) CT-scanner with a space resolution of 0,125 mm. Dual-energy CT was used to improve the image quality of dense materials reducing beam hardening artifacts. [...]

Results: 3D models of patients' anatomy and osteosynthesis materials could be rendered and exported as stereolithography files using open source 3D-rendering software. Using the stereolithography files precise computer aided preoperative planning in 3D could be done using open source CAD software. In addit[...]

Conclusion: Virtual simulations of operative procedures using open source CAD software may offer a step up in the accuracy of preoperative planning. Furthermore, open source virtual 3D-fusion could make preoperative CAD planning widely available.
