Aims and objectives: Soft tissue sarcomas are rare cancers accounting for approximately less than 1% of all adult cancers, occurring more frequently in younger adults1. Although relatively uncommon, they are known to be deadly due to delayed diagnosis or metastasis at presentation. Early stage sarcomas are especially d[...]

Methods and materials: The unified scoring criteria was formulated by reviewing soft tissue sarcoma guidelines, mentioned above, and the literature in general (Table 1). A mixture of six ultrasound and clinical parameters were identified as being characteristic of soft tissue sarcomas and formed the scoring system. One po[...]

Results: A total of 207 reports were collected and analysed with the vast majority of cases having a low score (Table 2 and Fig. 1). A total of 169 cases or ~80% of all cases, scored 0 or 1 (Fig. 2). In a significant proportion of these cases, normal tissue (approximately 63 reports) or simple benign lipomas[...]

Conclusion: In conclusion, soft tissue sarcomas are rare cancers that often present late due lack of early identifying symptoms or signs. Ultrasound can provide an effective means of screening soft tissue masses for sarcoma and other malignancies. We produced a unified scoring system based on soft tissue sarcom[...]
