C-1185 - Normal Variants of the Anterior Cerebral Circulation: Pearls and Pitfalls
E. youssef, S. Moawad, M. Bazerbashi, M. Buehler, H. Elsamaloty; Toledo/US
Type: Educational Exhibit
Area of Interest: Neuroradiology brain
Imaging Techniques: MR, CT-Angiography
Procedures: Education, Diagnostic procedure
Special Focus: Education and training

Learning objectives:
Describe the normal cerebral artery anatomy. Enumerate the different variants of the anterior cerebral circulation and its prevalence. Recognize the normal variants on digital subtraction angiography images. Understand the possible related clinical symptoms caused by the different variants.
Utilization of Multidetector CT (MDCT) scanner has dramatically increased over the years. Being the standard of care for stroke cases, the detected incidence of cerebral artery anatomical variants have increased. MDCT scanners detect over 90% of small vessel compared to digital subtraction angiograp[...]
Findings and procedure details:
Types of variants: Fenestration: Fenestration is the division of a single arterial lumen into 2 separate channels with distinct endothelial and muscularis layers. Duplication: Duplication is the presence of 2 distinct arteries with separate origins. Persistent fetal origin Bi/Trifurcation Accessory[...]
The use of the MDCT allows for evaluation of the cerebral arteries anatomy and normal variants. MDCT including 3D reconstruction and MIP can detect over 90% of small vessels compared to digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Detection of the normal variants is important because of the association wi[...]
